GETTING HERE

The nearest major airport to Fort Lewis is the Seattle-Tacoma International Airport. Taxi service is available from the airport, as is bus service through Pierce Transit.

The Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, or Sea-Tac, has a USO lounge on the second floor. There is a shuttle service from the airport directly to Fort Lewis and the Waller Hall Welcome Center. Call 1-800-562-7948 to contact the shuttle service.

If arriving by car from the airport, take Interstate 5 South from the airport. Fort Lewis is located about 33 miles south of Seattle. Take exit 122 to the Fort Lewis main gate, which is open 24 hours a day. Fort Lewis / Joint Base Lewis-McChord is a closed base - full ID is required to enter.

If travelling cross-country, Fort Lewis is in Washington State, just north of Olympia, just south of Tacoma, and about 45 miles south of Seattle, in the far northwest corner of the US. Make your best route to Washington State, usually on I-5 North-South or I-90 East-West. If coming over the Cascade Mountains on I-90, be sure your brakes and tires are in good order - some grades are very steep. In winter, chains may be required for traction.

Bus service and Amtrak are both available to Tacoma (closer to base) and Olympia along the West Coast and from the east. Taxi service, transit, or other pick up will be required from bus or train station.
