Fort Lewis is a large military reservation with urban areas on the north and south of the base, Puget Sound on another side, and a suburban-rural section on the fourth side. You have the option to use your BAH in two ways; by renting on post or renting/purchasing a home of your own off post.

Off Post Housing

Fort Lewis is located near Tacoma, Washington, in Pierce County. This is in the northwestern part of the state in what is often called the Puget Sound region. Tacoma has Washington's third largest population; Pierce County and Thurston County, just south of post, are both in the top most populated counties as well.

The average price of a home in Pierce County is about $300,000. Thurston County averages about $273,000. These areas are slightly lower than the state average of $308,000. An average apartment rents for about $1,050.

Families have a wide variety of communities to choose from here, in terms of off post housing, since there are many towns and cities varying from urban to rural, all within a 20-40 minute commute of post. Olympia, Yelm, and Lacey offer suburban and rural living, while suburban to urban areas include Graham, Tacoma, Lakewood, Puyallup, and Steilacoom.

On Post Housing

Fort Lewis / Joint Base Lewis-McChord on post housing is privatized through Lincoln Military Housing (Lewis-McChord Communities) . Applicants may be placed on a waiting list until appropriate space becomes available. There are 3800 Army-side units available for the Fort Lewis base population of 46,500 soldiers and airmen, plus 58,000 family. Minimum of 2 bedroom housing for ranks E1-E6, minimum 3 bedroom for E6+ and company and field grade officers.
