UNITS

Fort Lewis' major tenant is the I Corps which oversees the 7th Infantry Division, also a major unit.

I CORPS 253-967-0100
In addition to many change of commands and division evolutions, I Corps was also historically active in many of the U.S.í conflicts around the world after its start in 1918. It had been activated at Fort Lewis in 1981 to expand the Armyís reach into the Pacific, but soon it was clear it would be used for much more, as well. I Corps, and many other divisions from Lewis, were involved with Operation Desert Shield in Saudi Arabia. In 2004, Task Force Olympia (TFO) of the I Corps deployed to Mosul, Iraq, and took over command of all Northern Iraqi forces from the 101st Airborne, where it remained until 2005. The entire I Corps then deployed as a part of Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2009-10 and had control of Multi-National Corps, which would then become a part of the joint effort known as U.S. Forces Iraq in 2010. 2011-12 saw its forces sent to Afghanistan and the eventual reactivation of the 7th Infantry Division at JBLM which would train tens of thousands of soldiers and put them to work with the I Corps here at Fort Lewis.

555TH ENGINEER BRIGADE 253-967-5111
The 555th Engineer Brigade was started in 1943 at Fort Devens, MA, as the 1103d Engineer Combat Group Headquarters and Headquarters Company. Throughout its service in World War Two, which included the Normandy Invasion, providing supplies and maintenance, and the protection of bridges with General Pattonís Third Army, the group earned 5 streamer decorations. During the Cold War, the group served in Germany until its inactivation in 1969. It was not until 1992 that the Engineer Group was activated at Fort Lewis, and since that time has been involved in several projects around Lewis and many missions in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom, from 2003-2009. In 2007, after the groupís second tour in Iraq, it became the 555th Engineer Brigade as it is still known. The brigade has also deployed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom and continues to support the 7th Infantry Division and Fort Lewis.
